In House of Sand and Fog, Kathy (Connelly) gets evicted from her house for failing to pay a tax she never should have been charged in the first place. The house is swiftly put up for auction and bought by a former military officer from Iran named Behrani (Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast). When legal efforts fail her, Kathy turns to a sympathetic cop (Ron Eldard, Bastard Out of Carolina), who wants out of a loveless marriage and who's willing to step over legal boundaries if it might give him a fresh start. Topnotch performances by the entire cast make House of Sand and Fog a compelling psychological drama; your sympathies will be pulled in all directions. --Bret Fetzer

Making extensive use of CGI, prosthetics, and state-of-the-art puppetry, courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the Farscape concept has a freshness that makes it look and feel completely original. Leading toward the climax of the show's first season, "Nerve" and "The Hidden Memory" make for a bold two-parter in which Crichton is reunited with his Peacekeeper Tech girlfriend, Gilina, and emotions are strained as he infiltrates a Peacekeeper base to find a cure for Aeryn's wound. But the story's most important function is to introduce the dreaded Scorpius, who uses his Aurora Chair torture device to extract what he mistakenly believes is vital knowledge from Crichton. Scorpius, it soon becomes clear, is just not going to go away. --Mark Walker

The consistently inventive and entertaining animated series Ben 10 comes to a close with this double-disc set, which packages the final season with a terrific feature film, Ben 10: Secret of the Omnitrix. The core concept of the series remains unchanged in its swan song: Average kid Ben Tennyson is still spending his summer fighting evil aliens, mad scientists and robots with the help of the Omnitrix, an extraterrestrial device which allows him to transform into a host of powerful alien forms. Ben's menu of alter egos has expanded over the course of the series, and the aptly-named Way Big and Eye Guy joining the team in Season 4 to fight long-running arch-enemies like chief baddie Vilgax ("Goodbye and Good Riddance"), the Forever King ("Perfect Day") and Dr. Amino ("Divided We Stand" and "Goodbye and Good Riddance"). The two-part episode "Ben 10 vs. The Negative 10" brings the series to an appropriately slam-bang close as Ben ends his summer by fighting the Legion of Doom-style villain army atop Mt. Rushmore. Season 4 of Ben 10 ends the series on the same high note as it launched--rich in exciting adventures, clever scripting and some genuinely stunning visuals. The Complete Season 4 set includes all ten episodes of Ben 10's final season, as well as the Ben 10: Secret of the Omnitrix, a surprisingly dramatic feature-length story that finds Ben racing against time to find the Omnitrix's creator before it self-destructs. Four separate versions of the film are included, three of which offer alternate opening sequences, while the fourth (the TV version) comes with a text commentary track loaded with trivia about the movie and Ben 10 in general which first-time viewers may find helpful in keeping track of the show's vast array of characters. There's also a battery of deleted scenes from the film and a character gallery for fans to enjoy. --Paul Gaita

Four more monster-smashing adventures--with a healthy dose of teen angst on the side--await in Volume 2 of Ben 10: Alien Force, the follow-up to the highly successful animated sci-fi series Ben 10. The second volume continues to blend high-energy action and imaginative foes for teenaged Ben with an agreeable level of human drama--to wit, we find Ben on a date in "Pier Pressure," which is of course ruined by the arrival of a shape-shifting Galvanic Mechomorph in the form of a friendly mutt. Ben's sidekick Gwen also gets some character expansion in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" in which she's forced to choose between her extraterrestrial heritage and life on Earth with her friends. And Grandpa Max, who's been MIA for most of the series, makes a welcome if all too brief return in "Max Out," which introduces some particularly unpleasant foes which bear a strong resemblance to H.R. Giger's Alien. The balance of the slam-bang and the everyday is fairly even throughout the four episodes presented here; viewers tuning in just for the showdowns probably won't be turned off by the emotional stuff, and those looking for a shade more substance in their animation will be pleased by the depth of story and character. However, they might feel less charitable towards the limited number of episodes per disc, and the bare bones presentation, which includes a by-the-numbers making-of featurette. -- Paul Gaita

Spurred on by a bet from his best friend Brandon (newcomer, Christopher Cowan) with encouragement from his sister (Alexandra Paul, Baywatch) Josh sets out to find true love in the shallow pools of West Hollywood. If he fails, the lonely solitude of Cleveland, Ohio awaits him. Yikes! Refashioned by Jim J. Bullock (Too Close For Comfort), Josh sets out on the prowl. During the search for Mr. Right, Josh meets a bevy of attitudes: Bryce (Comedian, Scott Kennedy) the only remaining Marky Mark fan, Billy (David Faustino, Married With Children) the straight guy indulging his girlfriend s boy on boy fetish, a faux film maker (Sean Kanan, Bold & The Beautiful) and (Comedy Goddess) Judy Tenuta with some estranged love advice. Follow Josh on a whirlwind tour of the prevailing 10 Attitudes in Los Angeles, to see if he can find the loyal, trustworthy man who just puts three Equals in his coffee.

Average kid Ben Tennyson becomes a host of alien-fighting superheroes with the help of an extraterrestrial device in Ben 10, an engaging and kid-friendly animated series that arrives on DVD with a smattering of extras for series devotees. Ben 10's basic premise resembles the 1960s and 1980s DC Comic title Dial H for Hero, with affable teen Ben discovering an alien device called the Omnitrix after it crashes on Earth. The Omnitrix gives Ben the power to transform into ten different and powerful alien heroes, each with their own specific super powers. Ben's discovery of the device attracts the attention of evil space warrior Vilgax, who wants it for his own universe-conquering purposes. Episodes are divided between Ben tangling with Vilgax and his crew of monstrous henchmen, and Ben's struggles to fight crime with the Omnitrix, which occasionally malfunctions and summons the wrong hero at the wrong time. Episode highlights include "Washington B.C.," in which scientist Dr. Amino mutates animals (including dinosaurs) into powerful monsters; "Hunted," with Ben battling a trio of interstellar bounty hunters sent by Vilgax; and "Kevin 11," about a maladjusted kid whose powers of energy absorption threaten to steal away the powers of the Omnitrix. All 13 episodes of the 2005-2006 debut season of Ben 10are included on this double-disc set; fans also get a lesson on how to draw Ben from artist Scooter Tidwell, and there's a commentary track on "Secrets" from creators/Man of Action members Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and writers Tramm Wigzell and Thomas Pugsley. Several of the commentary participants also contribute to a brief sneak preview of an upcoming season. -- Paul Gaita
